Error when checking for new updates: Windows 7, 64 bit: Code 80072F76

  • Hi,

Could someone help me understand why I am getting the following error and how to resolve it?

Code 80072F76: Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

When I attempt to do a manual update, I am getting "The instruction at 0x00000000 referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be written."  This is followed by "Code 641 Windows Update encountered an unknown error."  I searched on the internet and based on the information I read, I ran " /" from the command prompt but this did not result in anything.  I have tried this a few times now and am not making any progress.  Now, I am not able to install the latest versions of "iCloud for Windows" version 7.5.0 and iTunes version 12.7.5,

    Can someone please help?

    Thank you,

  • Hi Mona.

As far as I know, the 80072F76 error code could be related to a temporary connection interruption.
As a first step, I'd suggest you to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter; also read the Microsoft Knowledge Base article 10164 which provides you with guided walk-through steps to fix problems with Windows Updates.

  • Hi Mona,

    Start Microsoft Internet Explorer.

On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.

Click the Security tab, and then click Trusted Sites.

Click Sites, and then click to clear the Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone check box.

In the Add this Web site to the zone box, type the following addresses, clicking Add after you type each address:

Try the Windows Update once again and in most cases it would go through

  • Thank you for the responses but none of them resolved the issues :-(

When the updates required are identified and the updates are getting installed, at ~30% of the way, the msiexe.exe - Application error window with "The instruction at 0x00000000 referenced memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be written. Click on OK to terminate the program." keeps popping up.  And the updates are not installed with Error(s) found: Code 641 Windows Update encountered an unknown error."  I have tried this multiple times but not able to get past these errors.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you,
