Manual Recovery Point Creation Failed (ID 104 Details: Access is denied (0x80070005)). RRS feed

  • Question

  • I created a manual replica for a Child Partition Snapshot for one of my servers because I was too large to transfer over the network. The host server has other Child Partition Snapshots that were created and sent to DPM 2012 atomically and are working great. This particular one though was just too large to transfer over the network.   I used the instructions in the Operations Guide for System Center Data Protection Manager 2012 page 83 and 84 which can be found here http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=29698 to make the manual replica.  I was able to make the replica and the initial Consistency Check worked fine. However, now when I try to manually create a recover point or DPM tries to make scheduled recover points for this  protection group, which only has the one manually Created Child Partition Backup in it, I get an error that says An unexpected error occurred while the job was running. (ID 104 Details: Access is denied (0x80070005)). I have read a couple of TechNet posts about this issue. One said that the DPMRA Service account may have been change and the other stated that the network may have been congested at the time of the backup. I have double checked and neither of the two issues are my problem. All other Protection groups are working fine too.

Here are the error logs that I get on the DPM server when the backup fails:

  • I believe this was a rights issue.   In the instructions found here http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff399552.aspx for “How to Manually Create a Replica” under step 3E says that “Now you can browse to view the entire path from step 3 in Windows Explorer.” However, this is not entirely true. You must give yourself rights to the drive to browse to it. I believe the mistake I made the first time was that I did not put the rights back to the way they were before I dismounted the drive.

I recreated the manual replica but this time I gave myself wrights to explore the drive after step 3D then after manually copying over the data, which is step 4, I put the rights back to the way they were. This seemed to have fixed the problem because now the protection group is working as it should.
