Edge cannot open documents from SharePoint search results.

    Question

  • In Edge... having a weird issue where documents (Word, Excel, etc) will open fine in document libraries, but asks to find a program in the Windows store when the same document is listed in a search result. No option but to go to the library from the search result, then open the document.

No issues with Internet Explorer. Search result opens fine in Word, Excel, etc.

    Anyone have any clues?

  • Hi,

Please try to run IE 10 Mode in Edge for your site, test again, compare the result.

There are some compatibility issues between SharePoint 2013 and Edge. For SharePoint 2013, I suggest you use IE instead Edge.

    Thanks,

    Wendy

  • Compatibility didn't work.

Pretty sad MS pushes adoption to Windows 10, encourages to the point of nagging to use Edge, but doesn't support it's own platforms in Edge.

  • Any updates on this?

We are now on the same problem, we are using SharePoint 2016 and getting ready to update our Clients from Win 7 / IE 11 to Win 10 with Edge.

We just did not Support Edge because of this and some other Problems.

But for the most things in SharePoint the Edge Browser works very well and very fast, but if we can't directly open documents from the search results it will be a pain to us it.

  • This is still an issue, but we're on Foundation 2013. This does not represent an issue in SharePoint Online, so you should have better luck with SharePoint 2016.

We're planning a migration to SharePoint Online, but may end up scrapping SharePoint altogether.

Honestly though... with all the lack of compatibility we've had with LOB sites, we've make IE11 the default app for all Win10 clients. High five Microsoft.
