Upgrading from MSP2003 to MSP2010 (both standalone) RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm working with a client who is upgrading from MSP2003 SP3 to MSP2010 SP1 (both standalone) as the IT function's standard planning tool for approx 200 users.

Are there any preferred upgrade routes for this and are there any known issues with the conversion process that I should be aware of?

    For example:

    1. Should the conversion be; open MSP2003 file, save as MSP2010 file or
    2. Should the conversion be multi step; open MSP2003 file, save as MSP2007 file, open MSP2007 file, save as MSP2010 file?

Any experience based answers would be much appreciated.

    Notes:

Although I've quoted MSP2010 SP1 as the target status, if there is a later Service Pack at the time of cutover then that will be adopted.

It is understood that MS Project Server would probabaly be the right tool for this number of users but at the moment that is not an option.

  • I've been successfully upgrading files by the first mechanism - i.e. 2003 to 2010.

I found if I need to convert back the way, i.e. from 2010 to 2003 I need to do it incrementally (i.e. via 2007), but going up the way happens without issue.

I don't think 200 MSP users is in itself a reason to go for Project Server - if standalone Project meets your requirements then I say stick with it.

    Thanks,
    Andrew

  • Thanks for the response, Andrew. I was hoping the simpler approach would work :-)

Finally, SP2 has just been released for Project 2010: http://technet.microsoft.com/tr-tr/office/ee748587.aspx

  • Thx Ismet

I've had a quick look at the links you posted; your MSPTIP looks very comprehensive and I'm sure I will use this a reference in future. Thx for the other links too
