Sharepoint portal server 2001 Client for Windows 7 RRS feed

  • Question

  • We are currently using Windows portal server 2001 on Windows server 2000. Users are using Windows XP SP3 and Office 2003. As Windows XP SP3 support ends April 8, 2014, we are planning to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7. But I found the client software of Sharepoint portal server 2001 does not work on Windows 7 both of 32bit and 64bit. I want to display contents in the web storage on Explorer view and we want to use Work flow feature like approve/reject.

Currently, we are actually using Client software of Sharepoint portal server 2003 on Windows XP. It is working perfectly on Windows XP for Sharepoint 2001.

We want to keep using Sharepoint portal server 2003 for a while after we upgraded client OSs to Windows 7. So, does anyone know how we can work the Sharepont client 2001 on Windows 7? Please help!

  • By Client Software, do you mean FrontPage?  Just to ensure I'm not confusing the applications.  it's probably been centuries since a SharePoint 2001 / STS question was asked here.

I'd really, really suggest upgrading that 2001 deployment as it's almost certainly going to be easier than trying to bridge a 10 year + technology gap.  Can you advise what server infrastructure your 2001 deployment is running on?

  • Thank you for your advice.

Client software is not FrontPage. it called "Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 Client Components for Backward-Compatible Document Libraries" and you can download from http://www.microsoft.com/en-US/download/details.aspx?id=16678

Sharepoint 2001 has Web storage system, and Client users can handle the contents as if they are regular folders and files on Windows Explorer and we can control Documents status like Check-in/Check-out/Publish/Approve/Reject on the Popup menu. I think only Sharepoint 2001 and 2003 have this feature.

Sharepoint 2001 is running on Windows 2000 server because only Windows 2000 supports it. But we can upgrade Sharepoint 2001 to 2003 easily. Sharepoint 2003 should work on Windows Server 2003.

I know Sharepoint 2001 is very old.  But we want to use it on Windows 7 for a while if possible until we found alternative good system . I want to know at least that it is possible or impossible to work Sharepoint 2003 client on Windows 7. Anyone knows?
