external disk has disk number and partition, but no volume or drive letter. RRS feed

  • Greetings.  I am at my wit's end!!!!

I have Vista Ultimate.  I have a maxtor 80 gig external hard disk connected via a usb port.  Computer manager shows that it's there, and how many megs are on it, but there is no volume or drive letter, It's just listed as disk 6 and I cannot see the disk under "computer".

It's a simple basic drive with no file system.  The file system column is blak, with neither NTFS not FAT 32 listed there.

I'm using RecoverMyFiles to verify that the data I have saved on it is still intact, and it IS all there, but Windows will not access it.

I tried using the diskpart command line interface to assign it a drive letter.  List partition says, OEM, and the storage size.  the assign command will not work on an OEM partition.

Is there a way to force Vista to recognize the data without losing it to a reformat or repartition?
