Project Portfolio Dashboard config - how? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We're very interested in exploring Office 365 Project Portfolio Dashboard and I've managed to install it on our sharepoint.

However, before I can "Add It" I am being told that I need to Turn on Project Web App Settings (as per screen shot below - sorry I can't add the screen shot because my account needs verifying....)

Anyway, after reading the documentation it states:

"To use the add-in in Project Server Permissions mode, a user must have the “Access Project Server Reporting Service”

global permission, and be a member of at least one of the following SharePoint groups:"

I don't know to do this, despite Googling it and looking through the PWA Admin settings.

Can someone help? What do I need to set and where do I need to go to do so?

    Thanks!

    Gary

  • Hi,

You can refer to this article: http://psbehindthescene.blogspot.fr/2016/06/access-denied-in-office-365-project.html

Basically, you need to manage permissions at PWA level (project server security groups) and site level (sharepoint security group):

    1. go to PWA server settings, open the manage security groups menu, open one of the group which as the “Access Project Server Reporting Service” permission such as portfoli manager and add the appropriate users.
    2. go to site settings, under site permissions, open the portfolio managers group and add the appropriate users.

    Hope this helps,

  • Hi Guillaume,

Thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunately I've fallen at the first hurdle, when I go into the PWA Settings from the "Wheel" settings menu I don't have the "Manage Security Groups Menu" to choose from.... On that screen there are things like "Personal Settings" , "Enterprise Data" , "Look and Feel" etc

I am setup as an O365 Admin for our site and have a Project license allocated to me; and infact I can see my projects online OK.

    Any ideas?

Also, I don't see Project anymore on our O365 landing page where you can see the other apps (Mail, Teams, Yammer ...etc)

    Thanks

  • So you're on SharePoint permission mode. Is it on purpose or you just kept this default permission mode? Otherwise we do advice sot switch to Project Server permission mode.

    https://support.office.com/en-us/article/Change-permission-management-in-Project-Online-3537c79a-1a5f-4b1e-9de0-c437673352c6?ui=en-US&rs=en-US&ad=US&fromAR=1

Once switched, you should find the menus.

As you can see, Project Online is a PPM application with a large set of settings and configuration, it could be useful for you to have guidance around the solution.

    Hope this helps,

    Hi Guillaume,

I'm not making much progress with this, I've tried to follow what's in the link provided but can't see the options they talk about.

I agree completely about having guidance around the solution; we have no one in my organization who knows much about sharepoint and O365. We just pay for it and use it, and support is fairly primitive. Can you recommend who I need to contact to get this resolved? We have telephone support but I feel we need more than that and are paying $60 per user per month to use Project Premium and feel we are being left to stumble around in the dark :(

Any help/advice you can suggest will be gratefully received.

    Regards

  • Hello All,

The SharePoint permission is fine for this Add-in - it is actually designed for this permission mode but it does work with the Project Permission mode too. See this post:

  • Hi,

Well I've just spent 3-4 hours this week on the phone with MS support trying to figure out the problem.

Eventually after much permission granting etc I can add the app and run it, however.... now I need to learn how to configure the dashboards to pick up our PWA projects as nothing is being shown as yet.

One thing I do get is an "!" underneath Content on the left hand menu and when I click it a window pops up with

    • Failed to load lookup tables. Error: Access denied. You do not have permission to perform this action or access this resource.
    • Failed to load custom fields. Error: Access denied. You do not have permission to perform this action or access this resource.

I guess this Portfolio dashboard wasn't meant to be easy for Project Online novices....

    Regards
