External Data Refresh Failed RRS feed

  • Question

  • I created a PowerPivot workbook in Office 2010 and loaded it to a BI Center in Sharepoint 2013.  Office 2010 is installed both locally and on the SP server.  I get the following error when I open the workbook and attempt to refresh data.   Since the same version of Excel was used to create it as the one the server is using, what is causing this problem?

  • It is not about the "Ofice" version on the server. PowerPivot for SharePoint 2013 is separate from PowerPivot for SharePoint 2010.

You can "display" 2010 PowerPivot Books in 2013 SharePoint, but not refresh.

Take a look at this link:

Key item of interest: When you use older PowerPivot workbooks on newer server platforms, you get the same functionality as before, minus scheduled data refresh. Using scheduled data refresh is supported only for Data Models that conform to the version of the server. See Upgrade Workbooks and Scheduled Data Refresh (SQL Server 2012 SP1)for more information.

  • I upgraded to Office 2013.  I pulled in data from a SQL table, created a power pivot chart from it.  I saved the workbook and reopened it.  Now when I click "Update All" in the Powerpivot section, I get "The command cannot be completed. No tables were detected in the active Excel workbook that are linked to PowerPivot tables."  If I click the Manage button, my tables are still there.  Help?

  • I'd start from scratch in Excel 2013.  I guess the main question is, since it sounds like you're not using OData, why are you using PowerPivot in the first place?
