  • If you install new servers it's quite simple. Install the new servers, promote them to DCs, make sure at least one of them contains the global catalog, transfer all FSMO roles to the new servers, demote old servers.

If you want to reuse hardware you should decide which one to reinstall first (1). Transfer all FSMO roles to the other one (2) and make sure it contains the Global Catalog. Demote server 1, reinstall, promote, transfer GC, transfer FSMO roles from server 2. Then do the same with server 2, except only transferring the FSMO roles you plan on having on server 2.

At last, when all DCs are 2008, you can consider if you should raise the forest/domain functional level of your domain.

When it comes to hardware requirements it is hard to say without knowing anything about the size of your environment.

  • Your hardware should do just fine. AD controllers don't require much. (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753439(WS.10).aspx)

As long as you have a mix of 2003 and 2008 DCs you can not upgrade the functional level to 2008. If you use mixed level you can upgrade to 2003 level.

  • It does not matter where you start as long as all DCs are 2008 or newer before raising the functional level.

  • Hi Eirik,

Actually Our FSMO roles is segregated to different- 2 Domain Controller those located in Different Site(Location). You can see my First request.

    Does it matter.

Also we have around 1000 Users and right now we are using 4 Domain for those which has around 2-3 GB Ram and Intel Pentium Core 2 Duo or Dual Core( For Hardware Requirement).

Also I think we can use both 2003 Server(Domain Controller) and 2008 Server(Domain Controller). In that scenario do we need to do Mixed Functional level(Domain/Forest).

    Thanks

  • Hey Eirik,

Just wondering if he should run the adprep commands on the 2003 DCs 1st?

since im not sure if he can promote the 2008 to DCs before he can d that.

    thank you

  • Yes, adprep is necessary before both the upgrade and the migration scenarios.
