Terminal Server License RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have an old Terminal Server(2003) with 7 CALs. I setup a new Server 2008 R2 terminal and would like to move the license over to the new server. Should I contact Microsoft Clearinghouse to transfer the CALs?

  • Hi,

Yes.  You can use the wizard in Server 2008 R2 RD Licensing to guide you through the migration.  Open up RD Licensing Manager on the Server 2008 R2, right-click on the server name and choose Manage Licenses (your server needs to be Activated).

Locate the Microsoft Clearinghouse Telephone Number for Your Country or Region

Please note that you need 2008/2012 RDS CALs to allow users to connect to a Server 2008 R2 RDSH server.

    Thanks.

  • Only 7 CALs. It's not like it's 10,000 CALs or something. Can't Microsoft let the 7 CALs go?

  • Hi,

If you want go ahead and try to install the 2003 TS CALs on the new 2008 R2 RD Licensing server without calling the Clearinghouse.  You can use the Install Licenses wizard.  If it lets you do it (it may) great, if not, then call the Clearinghouse.  It does not hurt anything to try to install the TS CALs.

  • I called MS ClearingHouse. The gentleman wants retail CAL code information. If I cannot get that information, I will try doing it. Hopefully, nothing breaks:-)
