Using Network Monitor to see what process are using how much bandwidth RRS feed

  • Question

  • My computer seems to be using a ton of bandwidth when its online. To the tune of over 100 megs an hour if left on. Now this is just general web surfing, no downloading and no streaming. It seems excessive.  I think there is a process in there that is doing the downloading. IS there a way to see what process is downloading what?

  • If you take a trace, you can see the traffic that each process is sending.  By viewing the number of frames as you select each you can get an idea of how much traffic each process is sending.

You can also use the TopUsers Expert (go to your Expert Menu and select Download Experts).  This will show you the traffci by IP address.  This might also give you an idea of the type of traffic that is consuming the most bandwidth.  You can use TopUsers to find the biggest traffic hog, then right click the row.  This will create a filter you can then use in the Network Monitor UI to discover which process is sending this traffic.
