Install the .NET Framework 3.5 software development kit (SDK) for SQL Server 2008 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

We are planning to install SQL Server 2008 EE on Windows 2003, which is a production box. In production box, do we need to install complete .NET Framework 3.5 software development kit (SDK)?

The SDK contains tools that are useful when you use the .NET Framework for SQL Server development. But on production box, do we really require this? what is exactly required. Please provide me the exact link to down load the required .NET Framework 3.5 (DBA's who already installed SQL Server 2008 on a production box, please advice)

The below is the link given in http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143506.aspx to download .NET Framework, which is for Windows Server 2008 but I'm looking for Windows Server 2003. I find .NET Framework from other sites but I'm looking for a Microsoft link. I appreciate your help

  • The .Net package uses various installer technology for different OS versions. But there is only one package and you will have to use that pacakge. You cannot select what to install or not, the package knows which sub-package should be used for Windows 2003 and will update your system accordingly. Though it is called SDK it has nothing but required DLLs for proper functioning of any managed assembly. There is no way around this to install selective files that is just enough for SQL Server.

  • Hi,

The SDK mentioned is for development not for installing SQL Server 2008. So in your 2003 production box, you don't need to install that SDK. As indicated in this page, you need to install .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 before install SQL Server 2008. Please install .NET Framework 3.5 first and then apply .NET Framework 3.5 SP1, which can be download from the following links:

    .NET Framework 3.5
    .NET Framework 3.5 SP1
