Content DB - Sites Table ID duplication with Config DB Site map RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am working on restoring a content DB from PRODUCTION to lower environment for a NEW Web application.   However, running the command stsadm -o addcontentdb and thenreviewing the Content DB under Central Admin the sites are returning 0 (zero).

I have read and figured out the problem is that ID (AKA GUID) is duplicated in another Web application on the Server.   I cannot delete the other Web application on the server as it is being used and I know this would fix the problem as there are 2 GUID duplicates between two different content DBs, Database=(2)Content_DB;Table=Sites;Field=ID and 1 entry in the Database=Config;Table=SiteMap;Field=ID.

I thought that if I removed the DB after the original attempt and ran the following STSADM command:
stsadm.exe -o addcontentdb -clearchangelog -url http://SharePointServer -assignnewdatabaseid 'GUID' -databasename WSS_Content_DB, it would assign a different GUID and fix the problem

My thought process was SharePoint will assign the GUID listed as a parameter in the STSADM command, however this is not working.   Yes, I know I can probably change the GUID with a SQL Query, but I do not want to go against Microsoft's recommendation of changing anything in the Databases associated with SharePoint.

    Look forward to hearing responses.

  • There's no indication in this post of which SharePoint product you are asking about.

Ought we to assume SPS 2010 based on (most of?) your other posts to SharePoint forums ?

  • Mike, sorry about that missing information, the environment is MOSS 2007 (the reason I posted in this forum and not the SP 2010 forums)...

We are working on an existing problem in the current environment (Still waiting on Tech and Ops to procure new 64 bit servers for Upgrade, I am sure you have heard that before LOL).   We have a 400GB content DB where the old SharePoint Support staff allowed for 1 site collection with infinate Subsites to be all contained in 1 site collection, so we are attempting to move the content DB from PROD to a lower environment, but in the past this content DB has been moved before thus causing the duplicate IDs.

We then need to figure out how do you slice and dice the 400GB content DB out of one site colleciton to make multiple site collection without third party tools and retaining all security permissions, content, etc.

Thank you so much for the reply.
