  • HI,

You can promote server 2019 as additional domain controller to replicate with SBS , once done you can demote SBS.

  • hi,
Windows Server 2019 Essentials supports for up to 25 user accounts and up to 50 devices .
Windows Server 2019 standard with essentials experience roles supports for up to 100 user accounts and up to 200 devices.
if you need to add 50 user to server 2019 ,I think you will purchase server 2019 standard.
we can install new server 2019 standard and active it first. then we can refer below document to try to migrate from SBS 2008 to server 2019 standard .

Migrate from Previous Versions to Windows Server Essentials or Windows Server Essentials Experience

  • "'Windows Server 2019 standard with essentials experience roles"

I was under the impression that this no longer is offered in server 2019.

  • hi,
yes ,the essentials experience role has been removed from server 2019 standard ,but from below method ,the essentials experience role can be reinstalled on server 2019 standard.
But in product environment ,it is recommend to migrate to server  2019 standard (with no essentials experience role installed) ,because there are many indefinite factor.

  • There are some issues you need to be aware of:

    1. You must migrate FRS to DFSR before you can install the 2019 and promote as replica DC,
    2. You must raise Forest and Domain Functional Level Windows Server 2008 before you can introduce a 2019 DC. Because of this you cannot have any other Domain Controllers in your Lan that are still on 2003.
    3. You cannot migrate the CA to 2019. If you need to migrate the CA you must introduce a Windows Server 2012 R2 Domain Controller first, backup the CA and restore to the new 2019 DC.
    4. You cannot use Migration Tools from Microsoft. They will not install on the SBS 2008.
