Disable or discourage "Expand Mode" in web standard? RRS feed

  • Question

  • We have an issue where it is possible for users to generate errors if they use "expand mode" indiscriminately, i.e. keep expanding stuff until they exceed the maximum number of allowed cells. Ideally, we'd like to still have the ability to expand available, at least for certain users, but would like most users to only have "Drill Down mode" available. Does that sound possible? Has anyone done anything like this?

    TIA

  • The way you can accomplish your task is to use the Publishing Properties feature of PAS.  For those users that you want to revoke the Expand feature, follow these steps:

    1. Create a role in PAS for these users
    2. Right-click on the role and choose Properties
    3. Switch to the Publishing tab
    4. Select Navigate Foreground and press the Details button
    5. Click on Collapse two times to Deny the feature.  Do the same for Expand.
    6. Press OK to close the Details dialog and press OK to close the Properties dialog

ProClarity built-in this capability of limiting the feature set back in ProClarity 5.  However, there is no guarantee that all of the settings have been fully tested from version to version.  Also be aware that messing with Publishing properties can create more maintenance work for you (it takes time to keep them up to date).  However, for a scenario like yours, it may be a simple way to solve your problem.

  • Hi Dan,

The only way that I know of to achieve what you're describing would be to either create "static" views for the users that you don't want to have the ability to expand/drill through (see page 91 of the PAS Admin Guide for Advanced Customization Options), or perhaps you could create security roles on your dimensions/cube that would limit what these particular users are able to access beneath a certain point.  This approach would keep you from having to create multiple versions of the same ProClarity view and assigning users to specific PAS groups, etc.

Hopefully you will have some success using one of these methods.
