Windows 7 Backup freezes computer RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

using Windows 7 Backup, the computer completely freezes while backing up one specific file (at about 64% total progress)
I already tried it with a clean start (only microsoft services via msconfig) - did not help.
    What can I do?

  • Hi,

Before going further, I would appreciate if you can help make the following questions clear:

    1. Is there any error message?
    2. Does it show the name of the specific file?
    3. Did you include a image backup? There is a check box  “Include a system image of drives…” before the backup actually started.

You  may encounter issues with other software installs a VSS Writer, or problems related to drivers, disk issues or hardware issues.

At this point, you can try the following steps to troubleshoot the issue:

    1. Check for disk issues using Chkdsk. If any issues are found, use “chkdsk /r” in WinRE to fix problems and mark bad sectors.
    2. Use “sfc /scannow” to check for and repair Windows system file integrity issues.

Errors during backup are reported via the event logs and files in %windir%\logs\WindowsBackup. The primary useful log is the skipped files log, saved as:
    Backup Files 000-00-00 000000_error.log
This file is removed at the end of the backup job if there were no skipped files or skipped volumes.

Please help collect the backup log so that we can perform further research. You can upload the collected files to SkyDrive, and let me know the URL by replying this thread. For detailed steps on how to upload files with SkyDrive, please refer to:
