SharePoint 2013. Excel Services. w3wp.exe fails with "Exception code: "

    Question

  • I came across an issue right after Microsoft update where the Excel Services failed to start in SharePoint 2013.
    When a user clicked an *.xlsx file the following message was displayed in the browser

    “We’re sorry. We ran into a problem completing your request. Please try that again in a few minutes”

    and the corresponding w3wp.exe process went down

    Event Log :

    An internal error occurred.

       at System.Diagnostics.PerformanceCounterLib.CounterExists(String machine, String category, String counter)

       at System.Diagnostics.PerformanceCounter.InitializeImpl()

       at System.Diagnostics.PerformanceCounter..ctor(String categoryName, String counterName, String instanceName, Boolean readOnly)

       at System.Diagnostics.PerformanceCounter..ctor(String categoryName, String counterName, Boolean readOnly)

       at Microsoft.Office.Excel.Server.CalculationServer.ExcelServerApp.Initialize()

       at Microsoft.Office.Server.Diagnostics.FirstChanceHandler.ExceptionFilter(Boolean fRethrowException, TryBlock tryBlock, FilterBlock filter, CatchBlock catchBlock, FinallyBlock finallyBlock)

    Checked Solution :

    Already have (WSS_WPG group )READ permission on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office Server\15.0 (in this case for the WSS_WPG group) allows the *.xlsx to open again.

  • Hi ajazali,

    Please check if the Excel service is started. Central Administration > System Settings > Manage Services on Server > Excel Calculation Service.

    Besides, check if the Excel Service Application is associated to the Web Application. Central Administration > Application Management > Manage Web Applications > Select the Web Application > Service Connections.

    If the issue still exists, please check ULS logs once the issue occurs for further research.

    The default path of ULS log files in SharePoint 2013 is: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\15\LOGS.

    Best Regards

    Linda Zhang
