Crawl a site immediately RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

In my work, the scheduled incremental crawl of a few content sources takes a very long time. At times we receive issues from users where content on their sharepoint 2010 site is not searchable. Investigation shows that these sites still havent been crawled. Is there any way/command/script, using which I can perform an immediate crawl of such sites to resolve user problem?

  • There is no immediate crawl functionality in SharePoint 2010. You could increase the frequency of the incremental crawl schedule, or if there are a number of sites in your content source being crawled, split them up into their own content sources and have them run on their own schedules.

Keep an eye on performance as crawling is intensive on the server performing the crawl, the server being crawled, and the database server(s) that contain the content and crawl databases.

SharePoint 2013 introduces a new "continuous crawl" feature that increases the frequency of the incremental crawls such that it is more or less always running.

    Hi Jason,

We are having an SharePoint 2010 Site which is having millions of documents within it. Even though FAST servers are deployed in separate FARM, for an Incremental Crawl its taking ~50 hours. So if we would like to crawl a specific Document Library or List, do we have any special power shell command to crawl specific Document Library?

  • Hi Soulwin

There is no specific powershell command to for this type of requirement in SP2010. There is only way of splitting your content data and using different crawling schedule.

As per my understanding, you can split your configuration on the basis of site collection(s) and can configure the different time schedule for each one in TEST Environment and can see the behaviour as well.

You can try by creating a seperate Crawl component using Sharepoint Central Administration to see that if it it decresing some time in incremental crawl.

Note: Please verify the disk space/memory used on the FAST Servers and the server where SQL Server is running to check the performance of incremental crawl.
