infected and can not boot into safe mode RRS feed

  • Question

  • Win 7 with 4 GB RAM

I've been infected by a virus that posses as a virus remover. I tried to boot into safe mode using F8 both by taping repeatedly and by simply holding the F8 key down to no avail. It keeps booting into "normal" Windows 7 but as soon as its finished loading the bogus "virus scan" begins.

I then tried to use MSCONFIG approach but the virus is making it so I can't type in the run field (I assume its the virus doing this)

Is there anything else I can try short of a clean install???

  • Klozaw,

If you have a software assurance contract with microsoft you can use DART (Its inside Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack).
This allows you to create a bootable cd and then you can use the Standalone System Sweeper feature.
This feature allows you to remove virusses of a non bootable system.
    More info here : http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee532075.aspx

In case you have no software assurance contract with microsoft.
You can download Bart PE  that allows you to create a bootable CD and with some plugins you can run anti mallware tools like:
    - Mcafee
    - Stinger
    - Adware Se ..

  • If the suggestion from daft doesn't work because you have no DART license, you can use this free Rescue CD:

    to clean the PC.

  • Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I didn't have the licenses and since I had a system image back up and my data on multiple drives I decided to simply restore the system image, run NOD32 and Malawarebyte scans and move on. I lost a few emails. I also learned a thing or two about file recovery software and how to better arrange everything. So it wasn't a complete waste of time...just mostly :- 0
