SBS 2011 Essentials OEM and SQL 2008 R2 Small Business OEM activation after HDD replacement

    Question

  • Hello,

Our organization have a SBS 2011 Essential, running SQL 2008 R2 Small Business on it. Both licenses are OEM license. One hard drive (mirror) in a mirror volume must be replaced with a new one. Will the Windows server and/or the SQL server ask for a new activation (product key) after the replacement? From licensing point of view: Is this kind of hardware change possible under the OEM license terms? Or license upgrade is needed?

    Thank you for your answers!

    Best Regards,

    BG

  • Hi,

As far as I know, in general, OEM license is bounding to its hardware motherboard, if you make significant changes, such as replacing the motherboard, it affects the system activation status. Drive which used to data storage replacement has less effect on system activation.

OEM license and activation are maintained by hardware/product provider/manufacturer, before changing, please contact your SBS device provider/manufacturer, confirm with their supporter about the details.
