  • How many times are you going to post this question?  It was answered yesterday before you did this post.

No matter how many times you ask the question, Windows XP Backup program cannot read the Windows 7 backup files!  They are two entirely different programs with two entirely different methods of writing their files.

The most logical method is to back up to another hard drive, either internal or external, and create a Windows 7 Recovery disc.  This method works as I have done it many times.

And, trying to restore a Win 7 backup with Win XP Backup program would be forward compatibility since XP is older than 7.  There is no forward compatibilty.  Neither is there backwards compatibilty from Win 7 to Win XP backups.

  • Please install the Update KB974674 [1]. This allows you to restore data from the old XP backups.

The OP is not asking about reading XP backups in Win 7, he is wanting to read Win 7 backup with the XP backup and that just is not possible! He wants to do Win 7 backups to an XP system and then read those Win 7 backups with the XP backup program which is not possible!

  • Perhaps you should consider a third-party alternative.

For example: Acronis True Image (www.acronis.com) works under XP and Win7. (It's not free, though.) I haven't tried any of the freeware alternatives, but something out there may meet your needs better than the Win7 backup utility.

Okay.  I guess didn't read carefully and I hadn't tried just backing files from Win 7.  I am in the habit of using Win 7's Backup and Restore to do a system backup.  Had not done just file backup.  A full system backup and updating with just changed files is just the way I have been doing it for as long as I can remember.

Therefore I definitely did not realize Win 7 file backups were packed into zip files.

I guess you learn something new everyday of your life!
