SCCM R2 Migration Plan

    Question

  • We have SCCM R2 right now and plan to set up a new version of SCCM since SCCM R2 is already un-supported by Microsoft and not support Windows 10.

Now we would like to setup a separate SCCM environment with New version and I want to know if we can install SCCM R2 SP1 -update to -> 1702 then apply the 1710 configuration manager console. Can we use the license of current SCCM R2 on the new version afterward.

Thanks for your advise in advance.

  • You can do in-place or side-by-side upgrade from current version to Current branch using baseline media 1702. There are lots of guides online available for upgrade .some of these will help you https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/core/servers/deploy/install/upgrade-to-configuration-manager

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sccm/core/migration/prerequisites-for-migration

For license ,if you already signed SA (software assurance) with Microsoft then you are good to use current branch ,for further information on license part, you can get in touch with your TAM (technical account manager).

This is not exactly correct. ConfigMgr 2012 R2 SP1 is in extended support but you are correct that it does not support Windows 10 (other than LTSB 2015) and that stepping up to CB is a good thing to do.

Keep in mind that CB 1702 (and above) do not support Windows Server 2008 or 2008 R2 as site servers or systems (except those that exclusively host the DP role) so you may have more work than a simple upgrade.

  • Thanks Eswar, since there is a lot of issue exist in the current SCCM environment and no one manage/maintains it for about one year. I prefer to setup a separate SCCM infra and plan to migrate some resource from the old one to new one.

If I am going to install SCCM 1702 directly, is the license in old sccm still apply on SCCM 1702. I am a new guy here, please kindly advise.

    Thanks.
