    The version MSI is 4.5 and Ii can not reinstall.

    I have verified that I can start the Windows Installer service without errors.

    I have searched all the usual places and found plenty of advice for Windows Installer problems in XP / 2003 / Vista but nothing for 2008.

    This server is a backup server (Veritas Backup Exec 12.5 and Vsphere Virtual Center). The servier is inside domain.

    can somebody help me?

    Thank you

  • hi there,

    thank you for posting in windows forums,

    can you try uninstalling from command line using msiexec , please follow the below link to check the available msiexec switches.

    is this issue happening only with symantec service / software or happens with any program installed on Add And Remove program console ?

  • Hi,

    Can you install or uninstall other MSI based applications such as Microsoft Office or Windows Live Messenger? If so, we can infer Windows Installer is working properly and this issue lies in the Symantec Backup program. As it is manufactured by a company independent of Microsoft, we are not the best resource to troubleshoot this issue. I suggest contacting Symantec for directly assistance.

    If Microsoft Office or Windows Live Messenger cannot be installed or uninstalled with the same error, I am afraid that Windows Installer is corrupt. I suggest trying the following methods to repair it:

    Method 1 Verify the DCOM Permissions

    ========================

    1.    Log on an account with administrator privileges.

    2.    Click Start, type dcomcnfg, and then press Enter.

    3.    Expand Component Services and Computers, right click My Computer and select Properties.

    4.    On the Default properties tab:

    5.    In the Default Authentication Level list, click Connect.

    6.    In the Default Impersonation Level list, click Identify, and then click OK.

    Method 2 Give Full Control Permission to the SYSTEM Account

    =======================================

    1.    Start Windows Explorer, right-click the computer’s root hard drive, and then click Properties.

    2.    Click the Security tab, and then click Edit.

    3.    In the Group or user names box, click the SYSTEM account.

    4.    Under Allow, make sure the Full Control checkbox is checked , and then click OK.

    Method 3 Verify the Registry Permissions

    ==========================

    1.    Click Start, type Regedt32 and then press Enter.

    2.    Select HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, on the Edit menu, click Permissions.

    3.    Verify that the SYSTEM account has been added and that it has Full control. If it does not, add the SYSTEM account with Full control.

    4.    Please use the same method to give Full control permission to the following registry keys:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

    HKEY_USERS

    HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG

    Method 4 Verify the Windows Installer service properties

    ===================================

    1.    Open the Service control panel by searching for services.msc on the Start Menu.

    2.    Right-click on Windows Installer and then select Properties.

    3.    Verify that the service is set to Manual Startup type and that the path to the executable is c:\Windows\system32\msiexec /V. (I am assuming C is your system drive)

    4.    Verify that the service is set to Log on as the Local System account on the Log On tab.

    Method 5 Import the registry

    =====================

    1.    Backup the following registry first:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\MSIServer

    2.    Download the MSIServer_08SP2.reg file from the following site:

    https://sftus.one.microsoft.com/choosetransfer.aspx?key=5c4fd804-f700-4a68-b9bf-462862643402

    Password: lfwwT[XIcpGt

    3.    Double-click the file to import the registry.

    Hope it helps.

  • Hi Tim, I've run into this issue as well. Would you mind reactivating the download one more time? Perhaps this should be posted as a regular "solution" on the MS web site, as it seems to be fixing a regularly occurring problem.

    Thanks!

  • Hi,

    You can export the following registry key from a working Windows server 2008 64bit system and then import it to your problematic Windows server 2008 64bit system.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\msiserver

    I did do the export, however I am continuing to receive an error -- the only variation is that I am running WS08 R2 x64 -- but the export came from a like server.   Iwas able to run an Office install without issue, yet the DPM 07 install fails with

    Review the error details, take appropriate action, and then run DPM Setup again.

  • I was getting this exact error while trying to install Symantec Backup Exec 12.5 on my shiny, new Dell Poweredge R710 with Windows Server 2008 R2.  I had the Broadcom network cards teamed using Broadcom's applet (downloaded from Dell).  Once I dissolved the team and configured one nic, I was able to complete my install.   I do not know if this will fix anyone else's issue, but I thought I would share that tidbit.

  • Hi Tim

    I am running a windows 2008 sp2 x64 server and have the same problem. If I try and install or remove an application I get the error message " Error 1719. The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance." I have tried a number of fixes but with no success. Do you think the fix you posted would work and if so could you post it again so I can give it a go.

    Thanks

  • Hi,

    You can export the following registry key from a working Windows server 2008 64bit system and then import it to your problematic Windows server 2008 64bit system.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\msiserver

    That post by Tim is what fixed it for me. Everyone who may have this issue in the future please refer to this post instead of asking for a download. Thanks Tim!

    Hi Tim,

    We have similar issue on installing Symantec Backup Exec 2010 System Recovery 2011 on Windows Server 2008 R2 with SP1. The Symantec engineer said the issue is MSi not working properly. I have run "sfc /scannow" but Windows said nothing to fix.

    Could you please reactive the link so that I can try to if that can fix our issue?

    Thank you.
