Winsxs holding 1/4 of my laptop hostage RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've currently got an early model vista laptop with an 80 gig drive. After about 3 years of use the winsxs folder is now holding nearly 20 gigs of that drive. I've already tried running the SP1 and SP2 cleanups, that is what got it to NEARLY under 20 gig (was 25 before). It's reached the point that I'm unable to install anything else, or even run virus scans as there's no disk space left (can't quarantine). With no Install media (thanks dell) is this machine ready for the real bin?

  • Since Winxsx is an important system folder you can't much about it's size.

What I would suggest is cloning the drive to a new, bigger drive so you can keep all your files, settings, and programs and that way you'll have a new, bigger hard drive.
