DPM 2016 not seeing all Hyper-V VMs RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a frustrating situation with DPM 2016 backing up Hyper-V hosts and their VMs.  We us a lot of Hyper-V replication.  When a primary VM fails and we do a permanent failover to the Replica, DPM will not 'see' those VMs in order to backup.  If I try to modify an existing protection group to add the VM, it only shows the primary VMs -- never the replicas or converted VMs from a replica.  I have taken to just backing up the VHD file from the disk as a last resort.

    Anyone have any ideas why DPM won't see these VMs to backup?

  • Manual host refresh doesn't help either? The automatic refresh job runs only once a day AFAIK.

  • Use powershell:

    $pg = Get-DPMProtectionGroup
    #Enter name of ProtectionGroup
    $ProtectionGroupName = "PGName"
    $tpg = $pg | ? { $_.Name -ieq $ProtectionGroupName }
    $mpg = Get-DPMModifiableProtectionGroup $tpg

    $ps = Get-DPMProductionServer
    #Vul hier de server in
    $Servers = $ps | ?{$_.servername -like 'Hyper-VHostName'} ##| ?{$_.servername -notin @('serverName','nameOfServer')}

    #ObjectType = VM or SQL DB = '*yper*' in of 'SQL*'
    foreach ($Server in $Servers)
    $ds += (Get-DPMDatasource -ProductionServer $Server -inquire) | ?{$_.ObjectType -like '*yper*'} ##| ?{$_.UnderActiveProtectionFromPS -like 'Fals*'}

    foreach ($unprotectedDS in $ds)
    Add-DPMChildDatasource -ProtectionGroup $mpg -ChildDatasource $unprotectedDS
    $gdsda = Get-DatasourceDiskAllocation -Datasource $unprotectedDS
    Set-DatasourceDiskAllocation -Datasource $unprotectedDS -ProtectionGroup $mpg

    Set-ReplicaCreationMethod -ProtectionGroup $mpg -Now
    Set-DPMProtectionGroup -ProtectionGroup $mpg

    Enter the needed variables and filters.
