Windows Server 2008 Server manager refresh failed-error 0x800B0100

Question

I have a server where I can't get at the roles or features nodes on the server manager because the refresh is failing. The event log shows this:
Could not discover the state of the system. An unexpected exception was found:
System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x800B0100): No signature was present in the subject. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800B0100)

I found a few threads online like http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winservermanager/thread/60f8c4c3-cc73-481e-b2fa-fcf8c63d1248, which indicates that it might be a failed windows update. I checked the CheckSUR.log file, and found this:
(f) CBS MUM Missing 0x00000002 servicing\packages\Package_for_KB948881_server_0~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.0.1.1.mum
(f) CBS MUM Missing 0x00000002 servicing\packages\Package_for_KB948881_server~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.0.1.1.mum
(f) CBS MUM Missing 0x00000002 servicing\packages\Package_for_KB948881~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.0.1.1.mum
Sure enough, those files were missing, so I looked for those files on another WS2008 machine, and they weren't there either. I downloaded and tried to install the KB948881 update standalone, but the update failed to install. Then I tried extracting the files from the msu file manually, and copying them into the \servicing\packages directory, but this only gave me a new error that referenced a file that wasn't in the msu package.
(f) CBS MUM Missing 0x00000002 servicing\packages\Package_for_KB948881~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.0.1.1.mum
Does anyone have any other ideas on what to try here?Tuesday, May 12, 2009 3:49 PM

Hi Chris,
This issue can occur if KB948881 package files are missing or corrupt.
Please download the files from the following site and copy them to c:\windows\servicing\packages (replace the old one).

Hello Tim! I tried to go to that URL and use the password that you posted, because I am having the exact same problem with the same update (KB948881) on three of my Windows Server 2008 machines in production, but when I used the password a new screen came up showing that there were no files to download. Could you please help me obtain those files too? I am excited to get them, as it helped out the other user having the problem!

Hi Tim. Same problem for me as the one described in the top post (except it’s not the same update).
Here is the content of the CheckSUR.log file:
(f) CBS MUM Missing 0x00000002 servicing\packages\Package_for_KB958483~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.0.1.2.mum
I already get the 2 other files (Package_for_KB958483_server_0~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.0.1.2.mum and Package_for_KB958483_server~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.0.1.2.mum).
Could you provide me this missing file (*.cat and *.mum)?
Thanks in advance,
bernard

Hi forum members,
As you may request for different update packages, publishing them in a same thread may cause confusion. Please post new threads to request your update packages and I will provide the download links for you. Meanwhile, I will lock this thread. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
