Server 2016 Essentials error 0x80073701

    Question

  • Hi, I need help I'm a network guy so new to server stuff. I've already tried the dism /online /cleanup-image /restore health along with sfc /scannow and they all came with no errors. I've also tried looking at the updates to see if there was anything missing.  As it stands reinstalling the server is not an option. I have the CBS.logs if anybody can help me understand them.

  • Hi,

As far as I know, Windows Update error 0x80073701 (ERROR_SXS_ASSEMBLY_MISSING) means system file missing.

I want to confirm with you if this problem only happens when installing specific Windows Update? If so, please provide me the KB number of the update.

Please try below suggestion first and check the result:
    1. Run “chkdsk /r /f” to check/repair disks.

    2. Open CMD and select Run as Administrator. Type below command, each line end with enter:
    net stop wuauserv
    ren c:/windows/SoftwareDistribution softwaredistribution.old
    net start wuauserv

    3. Disable 3rd party process, if possible, re-start the system in Clean Boot and try to re-install update and check the result.
