Why are there warnings for bootup/shutdown? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I just build my computer and I installed Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on my Intel SSD 80GB. I turned off prefetch and one other thing I can't remember so it won't reduce life of the SSD. Most, if not all, of the warnings in the Event Viewer either tells me it is too slow to startup or shutdown, or a name of some exe (like SMSSINIT) that is slow or something like that.

What causes these errors? Because I see that they are under 30000ms which is pretty decent for a brand new pc (nothing is installed, not even Windows updates, but just some drivers for my graphics card and chipset etc), so I don't know what Windows is complaining about.. Any help?

  • You made something wrong. I was able to generate the XML:

Your Windows shuts down in 6 seconds. so there is nothing to worry.

Stopping the services takes 1s, closing all running programs takes 3.3 seconds. The rest is also ok.

Ignore the entries from the Eventlog.

Only if you see critical entries you should run a new trace and look what's wrong.

    best regards

    Hi,

    I also don't like it.

David J answered the question some time ago:

Follow my guide [1] to make a boot trace and compress the boot_BASE+CSWITCH+DRIVERS+POWER_1.etl as 7z or RAR and upload it to your Skydrive [2] and post the link here.

I take a look at the trace and tell you exactly how long Windows boots.

    Shutdown:

I appreciate your time for helping out to take a look at those files and see if anything is out of the ordinary :o

  • the boot is extremely fast:

    timing bootDoneViaExplorer =" 6856 " bootDoneViaPostBoot =" 17256 "

6.9s to boot to the desktop and 7.2s to boot completely! This is amazing fast!

    the shutdown XMl is wrong.

  • I got some warnings for the SMSsmit thing during bootup though...  does it matter?

This page contains the following errors:

error on line 1 at column 1: Document is empty

Below is a rendering of the page up to the first error.

As for the above shutdown xml, I got this as well and I don't know why that's the case though. I converted it without errors but upon opening it's like that. I will try to upload the original file before conversion and post back here again..

have you used the correct command?

    xperf -i shutdown_BASE+CSWITCH+DRIVERS+POWER_1.etl -o summary_shutdown.xml -a shutdown

  • Yes I did use the correct command, but it just wont convert! :(

So I uploaded the original .etl file (it's 7mb+ big zipped) instead, maybe you can find why is that happening:
