DPM 2010/Exchange 2010 BMR System State RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am using DPM 2010 RTM and attempting to backup Exchange 2010 MBX server BMR and system state.  All servers are running 2k8 R2.  I'm running into this problem .  Anyone know if this is on the road map to be fixed or have any more details on the second resolution (editing the lhsystemstatebackup.cmd script)?

    Thanks,

    Peter

  • Hello Peter,

    Yes, Forefront is working on a fix to correct the problem, in the meantime, here is the additional details you seek.

    For DPM 2010, if you are protecting the SYSTEMSTATE of the protected server you can edit the C:\Program Files\Microsoft DPM\DPM\Bin\LHSystemStateBackup.cmd file on the production server and add the net stop/start commands before and after the call to wbadmin.exe to perform the systemstate backup.

    Example of Modified LHSystemStateBackup.cmd to stop / start the forefront vss writer service.

    @echo off

    if not exist %SystemRoot%\system32\wbadmin.exe goto returnError

    rmdir /S /Q %1\WindowsImageBackup

    rem Start a wbadmin.exe to create a systemstate backup

    net stop FSCVSSWRITER
    start  /WAIT %SystemRoot%\system32\wbadmin.exe start systemstatebackup -quiet -backuptarget:%1
    rem If return error code, Pass this error code to caller else check whether it actually succeeded or not
    if %ERRORLEVEL% == 0 goto returnSuccess
    net start FSCVSSWRITER
    exit /B 1

    :returnSuccess
    net start FSCVSSWRITER
    exit /B 0

    :returnError
    exit /B 1

    If you are protecting BARE METAL RECOVERY (MBR) using DPM 2010, you can edit the C:\Program Files\Microsoft DPM\DPM\Bin\BmrBackup.cmd file on the production server and add the net stop/start commands before and after the call to wbadmin.exe to perform the BMR backup.

    Example of Modified BmrBackup.cmd to stop / start the forefront vss writer service.

    @echo off

    if not exist %SystemRoot%\system32\wbadmin.exe goto returnError

    rmdir /S /Q %1\WindowsImageBackup

    rem Start a wbadmin.exe to create a BMR backup

    net stop FSCVSSWRITER
    start  /WAIT %SystemRoot%\system32\wbadmin.exe start backup -allcritical -quiet -backuptarget:%1

    rem If return error code, Pass this error code to caller else check whether it actually succeeded or not
    if %ERRORLEVEL% == 0 goto returnSuccess
    net start FSCVSSWRITER
    exit /B 1

    :returnSuccess
    net start FSCVSSWRITER
    exit /B 0

    :returnError
    exit /B 1
