Tell us if your friend still has the same issue. I would suspect he still does. This type of malware infection has to be dealt with by the use of several tools. And keep in mind as well, system restore will not likely get all of the malwares out of
the way. This type of malware usually sets up several re-infection vectors that are not covered by System Restore.
In addition, while MBAM is an excellent anti-malware, it alone will not catch everything.
I would urge your friend to get expert guided help for free at an anti-malware removal forum ! Malware cleanups are too involved & complicated to deal with here.
