SCVMM Upgrade of version 4.0.1660.0 possible?

    Question

  • Hi,

So we have this solution running 4.0.1660.0 which we want to upgrade - but I am not sure how to do it.

The Logical Switch was deployed through SCVMM, and if I - lets say, install a new SCVMM 2016 RTM, will I be able to just add the Cluster to this SCVMM, and then edit in the Logical Switch from the new SCVMM, or how would this network switch behave?

Any help here, is much appreciated.

  • Hi mikkelknudsen,

Your current configurations should stay while doing an upgrade to SCVMM 2016.
I have done one myself without losing anything.

Make sure you follow the steps described in the link below before upgrading.

    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/system-center/vmm/upgrade?view=sc-vmm-2016

    Kind regards,
    Leon

  • Hello,

You can either upgrade the existing SCVMM server, or deploy a new one.

To upgrade the server, you must download the upgrade packages from the following KB article. After then, you should install the update for SCVMM server, SCVMM console, and SCVMM agents on the hosts.

    https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/help/4094925/update-rollup-5-for-system-center-2016-virtual-machine-manager

If you deploy a new SCVMM server, you should create the same logical network, and logical switch as the previous one. And then, you can migrate the VMs to the new SCVMM server.

    Best regards,

The link seems to be broken.

However, should I uinstall currenly SCVMM, and retain the DB - and then install the new SCVMM 2016 RU5, and use existing DB, or?

  • Hi,

It seems the link died indeed :(

As Andy Liu50 stated above you can either upgrade the existing SCVMM server or deploy a new one by retaining your database.

Upgrading would be the easiest and quickest way.

    Kind regards,
    Leon

  • Question - if I want to "Upgrade" the current installation - how do I do that?

When I run the setup.exe - I dont see any "Upgrade" paths - what am I missing?

  • Hello,

Please retrieve the download link for UR5 from the following KB article, and read the install instructions in the KB article. You DON'T need to uninstall the VMM server with retain DB, you can just install the UR5 directly.

  • Hello,

Instead of using the command for installation, you also can just double click the msp file for installation.

In addition, according to the KB article, you should run the command from an elevated command prompt. Thus, please run the command in CMD, NOT PowerShell.

    Exactly same issue.

I dont believe that there is a supported path for upgrading from private to public release.

    Anybody who can confirm this?
