  • In this article Microsoft explains how to unextend and re-extend the Web application, and reconfigure alternate access mapping URLs or IIS Web site bindings, in order to change the url of a web application.

You can also extend your existing Web application if you want your old url and your new url to expose the same content to users.

You must make sure to create a A record in your dns to point to the ip address of your SharePoint Server.

  • if you want to change the name on the development server then simply extend that web application using the URL will solve the issue.

but if you want use the domain name in the production server then you just simply take the backup of your site collection and restore it to production.you create a new web application in the production with the your desired URL and restore that site under that.

    i hope this works

    thanks
