DPM 2010 Temporary Backup Location RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

For DPM 2010, does the DPM Server requires Disk Space equal or greater than the backup size? if so, where is the temporary backup/restore location located and is there a way we can change the temporary backup/restore location?

From my understanding for other backup softwares is that it stores the backup temporarily on the backup server before writing to tape/disk. is this true for DPM as well?

    regards,

    arthur

  • Hi Arthur,

DPM perform continous backup (snapshots) on the changes that is happening in the server in replica volume and move those replicas to Recovery Point voulume

Once the replicas (changes made betweeen the last backup) are segregated for a period of time, and when the next schedule of backup comes the replica volume data will written into Recovery point volume.

Recovery Point - Holds the backup copy at that time

Replica volume - Holds only the changes that were made between last backup schedule

For your QUestion - Yes you need 1.5 times higher space allocated in Replica and Recovery Point volume

your temp location is nothing but the Replica Volume

MS article for your reference on the space allocation - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb795684.aspx

  • Hi,

Thanks for the Response. I just have additional question with regards to the Replica Volume. Does the replica volume reside on the the Hard Disk? if it does which hard disk? can we change the location?

Does this apply if we just want to backup to Tape Directly? or does it still need the temporary disk space allocation?
