Mail changing from Unread to Read on it's own or automatically Outlook 2016

    Question

  • We're having an issue with a user who claims that emails are automatically changing from Unread to Read without having clicked on them. This particular user does not have a phone connected to Exchange, does not have OWA access, and only has this Outlook client on 1 computer. Is there anything, other than someone else reading emails from another machine, that would cause this behavior?

  • Hi juicejug1016,

    >> emails are automatically changing from Unread to Read without having clicked on them.

Does this issue affect all mails?
Do you mean the emails change from unread to read immediately after they arrive?

Please have a check at the following settings via File > Options > Advanced to make sure that the user doesn't set Outlook to automatically have messages marked as read:

Besides, to narrow down if the issue is related to any third party add-ins, it is recommended to try starting Outlook in safe mode (Press Win + R, type "outlook /safe", press Enter.) and check the result.

If the problem still exists, please try create a new profile on this machine or configure the user's profile on another computer to have a try.

Any findings, please feel free to let us know.

    Best regards,
    Yuki Sun
