  • This will show you if Hyper-V role is installed, and what version it is:

    if (Get-WindowsFeature -Name Hyper-V) {
        Write-Output "Hyper-V role is installed"
        $VMMS = Get-ItemProperty -Path "$env:SystemRoot\system32\vmms.exe"
        Write-Output "Manufacturer: Microsoft Corporation"
        Write-Output "Version: $($VMMS.VersionInfo.FileVersion)"
        Write-Output "Created on: $($VMMS.CreationTime)"
    } else {
        "Hyper-V role is not installed"

    I suppose you can do some testing first to see if the machine is a VM or a physical host. Detecting other hypervisors, identifying whether they're type-1 or type-2, getting details about version, will depend on each hypervisor you're looking for.

    What have you tried so far?
