Unable to install DPM 2019 with SQL 2019 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm trying to install DPM 2019. I have a standalone SQL 2019 (15.0.2070.41) server, reporting service is installed and configured, SQL prep files are installed, I can browse DB from DPM server. SSMS 18.6 is installed on DPM server. I'm getting "SQL Server Management Tools are not installed on this machine" error all the time. I tried to use SSMS versions 16.5.3, 17.9.1, 18.4 and 18.6. I saw a lot of people have the same problem, but none of solutions worked for me. Here is what I got in logs:

    [9/10/2020 4:19:04 PM] Data : checkId = SQLServerTools

  • Hi,

Try to connect to the WMI namespace using WBEMTEST tool on the SQL server:

    \\<SQL server name>\root\Microsoft\SqlServer\ComputerManagement15

and then run click on the query box and run below query to check if SQL Tool version is returned:

Select * from SqlServiceAdvancedProperty where ServiceName='MSSQLSERVER' and PropertyName='Version

  • Hi,

Is the SQL Server located locally or remotely?

There have been a lot of issues with the SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) versions, I know that version 17.9.1 has always worked with DPM 2019 installations.

Make sure you meet all the prerequisites, if the SQL Server is located remotely make sure you have run the SQL prep tools, ensure you have the correct port and SQL Server name, if you have a named instance, make sure to use that, and of course check the firewall that it is not blocking.

Also make sure the SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) has a database created, both Web Service & Web Portal URLs configured, make sure you are running a domain-account or network service for the SSRS service.

If all of the above are checked and "OK", delete all DPM installation logs, reboot and try again and report back to us.

    Best regards,
    Leon

  • Here is what I got from \\<SQL server name>\root\Microsoft\SqlServer\ComputerManagement15 query:

    SqlServiceAdvancedProperty.PropertyIndex=1.PropertyName="VERSION".ServiceName="MSSQLSERVER".SqlServiceType=1

UPDATED: Oh, I didn't looked into results of the query. Version is 15.0.2000.5

  • Yeah, we meet all prerequisites, I checked twice. Prep tools are installed, firewall disabled on both machines. I crerated DB and configured both Web Portal and Web Service URLs, SSRS running on network service account. I did delete logs, restart machine - still nothing. Than I uninstalled 18.6, removed logs, restart machine, installed 17.9.1, restart machine, tried to install DPM and it's still won't work for me.

Does the logs still give the same error? Can you upload full DPM installation log to a Microsoft OneDrive / Google Drive and share the link here?

Are you running other SQL instances on the server where the DPM SQL is running?

You could also try with the RTM version of SQL Server 2019.
