SAN Options for DPM? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I am putting together the plans for implementing DPM in a 30 server/Hyper-V environment.  I would like to know what others are using for their disk storage options.  An enterprise SAN server is out of the question due to cost, so I'm looking at things like the QNAP or Thecus options.  I also see I can turn a Windows 2012 server into a SAN server.  Can anyone comment on these options and provide some input?

  • Hi,

Any non-removable block level devices are supported for storage pool disks, so basically any non-removable physical disks you can see in Windows disk management (excluding the disk that has the o.s. installed).  These can be local DASD (Scsi, SAS, SATA), or Fiber attached SAN LUN, or iSCSI attached disk.

NAS (network attached storage) devices that emulate a SMB accessible volume will not work as DPM Storage pool.

Windows 2012 Storage spaces are also not supported for DPM storage pool usage.
