Skype for Business (SfB) on-premises federation RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I'm planning to do SfB federation between SIP Domain A and SIP Domain B;  both domains are internal but different forest.

Do I need to deploy SfB edge and reverse proxy for internal network?

    Please advice.  Thanks.

  • Hi Kelvin Teang,

    Thanks for your response.

For this, you need to set up one Edge server for domainA, one Edge server for domain.

  • Hi Kelvin Teang,

For your situation, if you want to do federation, you must deploy Edge server, but for Edge server, you need to deploy it in the DMZ area, and configure two network adapters for Edge server, one for internal access, the other for external access.

In conclusion, you need to deploy Edge server in DMZ for SFB federation.

For reverse proxy, it is not required for Lync federation. However , external services like meeting content download , joining in to meeting , address book download, mobility services will be proxied via reverse proxy.

I will share a document about how to deploy Edge server, please refer to

  • Thanks Alice. I'm thinking to setup 1 single internal NIC and edge pool is shared for both forest. Is it possible? Don't wish to setup too many edge server as SfB is not explored to internet usage. Regards, Kelvin
