Single UM server in a Federation? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Can a single UM-server support a federation of Exchange servers?

In our organization, departments use various email systems.  More and more are going to their own department Exchange deployments, but we currently have a single voicemail system and central PBX that serves the entire organization.

How would we handle voicemail for the entire organization in order to replace our legacy voicemail system without having to create UM-enabled email accounts on our Exchange server for users in other departments or external Exchange organizations?  Since the other departments are on different domains, it would not make much sense to do it this way.  So, I'm wondering if at least for the Exchange-centric departments if we can create a federated trust between the other Exchange environments and use a single UM server to service everyone?

We would prefer to have a single UM-server then having to deploy and manage departmental UM-servers for each Exchange organization.

    Thanks.

Answers

  • The UM server could support multiple Exchange servers only within the same Active Directory forest.  Each Exchange org in it's own forest would need a UM server installed as the configuration and functionality is tied to the forest and schema.
