Use pop-up blocker and Turn on Pop-up Blocker RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

Can someone clarify how the settings "Use pop-up blocker" and "Turn on Pop-up Blocker" work together ?

Will the pop-up blocker be active if I enable "use pop-up blocker" in a security zone and uncheck Turn on pop-up blocker in privacy settings ?

    Regards,

    Michel

  • Hi Michel,

According to our common sense, when we want to achieve one function, we must start it in advance, then, we could choose use or don’t use this function.

After figuring out this point, current condition is easy to understand. At first, we need to turn on Pop-up Blocker function, then, we choose whether enable or disable it. If we has turned off Pop-up Blocker in Privacy, even if we enable it in the Custom level, its function will not be achieved.

In addition, there is an official help documentation can give us more information about pop-up blocker, please check it

    Hope my clarification is clear.

  • Hi,

there is also a user-defined white list...(>Popup-blocker Settings.)

the security zone entries are the equivalent of the user-defined white list... in that ALL domains that map say to the Intranet zone will allow popups from domains that map to the intranet zone...

By default the Internet and Restricted Sites Zones block popups when the popup blocker is turned on and the current site/domain is not in the users own popup blocker white list.

but if you have turned off the popup blocker... then it is superfluous to use a white list to prevent an action that you have allowed.

You may have mixed content web pages on a site... eg.... domain.x uses content from domain.y in an iframe which in turn uses scripted windows..... when the popup blocking rules may become confusing because of the other security zone settings (scripted windows size and position)....

Commonly.... browser addons that have their own built-in popup blocker.. (eg. Google toolbar) should be disabled (turned off)... (you don't need two popup blockers)... and outcomes may vary depending on how the two methods (GTB's and IE's security zones) differ..... Addons and other browser popup blockers do not use the same security zone model as IE.

    Regards.
