Message Tracking Center won't track messages

Question
-
Hi Everyone, we have been experiencing a weird phenomenon in Exchange 2003 on Win2k3. We can open system manager, can get into Message Tracking Center, but no matter what you put in for search criteria (which it does adjust and match to AD accounts), you receive an error stating that:
The search could not be completed. Check to see that the Microsoft Exchange Management service is running on all Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003 installations.
This is a single server environment, and the service is running. Any thoughts? There are no errors present in the event log at the time a search is initiated, none directly after either. No apparent reason for this.
Anyone seen this before?

Hi Ken,
Please restart Windows Management Instrumentation service and test the issue again. At the same time, please make sure the logon account is Local system account.
Thanks,
Elvis

I have seen this before. Make sure Exchange Management service is started...which I believe you said was...just confirm. Also, try increasing your IRPStacks in the registry.Monday, August 10, 2009 6:31 PM

Ken,
Just to make sure again, can you check if the message tracking is enabled on all the servers? If you are performing message tracking from a remote server or a workstation make sure you have message tracking enabled on the server where the mailbox in question is hosted. You can enable it in properties of the server.

Hi Are you trying to do message tracking from server itself or from different server?

I had the same issue, with the same error on SBS2003. Restarting the Microsoft Exchange Management service made no difference.
I found the problem was the Workstation service was not running. I started the Workstation service and the Message Tracking Centre in Exchange System Manager worked fine.
The other service to be aware of that may prevent Message Tracking from working is the Server service (which also has multiple Echange dependancies), so you can also try restarting that..
Hope that helps.
