Ok, so, this machine is currently configured as KMSclient.
Does your company have a KMShost server deployed on premises?
Is that KMShost published into your DNS, and this machine can resolve that hostname, and connect to that host?
Or, is your machine incorrectly configured as KMSclient? (should it be configured with MAK product key?)

  • <quote>To setup a KMShost server, itself requires a different type of product key.</quote>

    What is it?

And is the original key was pre-installed in the machine? Now I use the key via MSDN, does it mean the key is wasted?

a KMShost product key is provided to an organisation, when the organisation enters into a Volume Licensing agreement with Microsoft. The VL agreement may provide entitlement to various Microsoft products, including WindowsServer, WindowsClient, Office, etc.

If your organisation has a current VL agreement with Microsoft, you should contact your organisation's VL agreement contact-person or your IT department.

a KMShost product key is a valuable asset/investment by your organisation, and should not be shared publicly.

The product key you earlier mentioned, which ends in R7VHC, is a KMSclient product key, used by all VL customers globally in common, and is published by MS here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj612867

This KMSclient product key is not wasted, since it's value is nearly zero when used without a KMShost.

  • I downloaded 968912 and run the command

    w32tm /resync

The error is still there. The funny thing is when I check control panel, it shows windows is up to date already. Why?

  • Hi,

Run slmgr –ipk <KMS Host key> the command allow to replace your KMS key.

If you want to display the current licensing status, execute: SLMGR.VBS /DLV

    Also try the blog:

Is your VM intended to be to be configured as KMSclient or KMShost or MAK or is it Retail channel product key?

    On your VM, execute:
    cscript slmgr.vbs /dlv all > c:\kmsout.txt
post the output here for us to analyse for you.

  • I reinput a key from MSDN Subscriptions and the error disappeared.

    So questions:

    1. Before that while I still could access it?
    2. The system did have a key, I used a free software to find it. Why it didn't work?

there are many different types of product keys.
a product key must be a match for the type of product and the licensing-channel of the product, and also for the implementation scenario your are using.

You originally had a KMSclient product key. this requires that you have a KMShost server implemented within your network. To setup a KMShost server, itself requires a different type of product key.

If you have changed your product key, to a product key offered in your MSDN, that cannot be a KMS product key (since KMS keys are never offered via MSDN), so I am guessing that you have now changed to a Retail licensing-channel product key, which does not require an on-premises KMShost, so it will happily activate via internet to MS webservers.

a KMShost product key is provided to an organisation, when the organisation enters into a Volume Licensing agreement with Microsoft.
