OS Install Always Re-Runs RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have a good ol'fashioned Win 10 OS deployment task.  It is pushed to machines as required with 'rerun if failed previous attempt'.  However, it always re-runs!  I realize I can just change 'rerun if failed' to 'never rerun' but then if there is a problem it won't fix it.   As is stands, if I break the re-image loop (clear pxe), the machine works great.  If left untouched, that working-great machine will reimage over and over.

Deploy > Add the Collection > Purpose Required > Make available to Config clients, media, and pxe > Assign immediately after this event (as soon as possible) > Rerun if failed previous attempt

    I'm running SCCM 1906

Here are the logs of one of the machines that re-imaged over 20 times in 3 days, yet when I cleared pxe and killed the TS, it works fine.

  • Which scenario are you implementing here? New computer (aka bare metal) only?

  • It's a Windows 7 Edu desktop upgrade to a Win 10 captured image.  It will work beautifully about 60% of the time, but the other 40% it gets in that re-image loop.

  • Upgrade? That TS doesn't perform an upgrade at all, it's installs a clean OS.

So, the question is, how are you initiating the TS? Boot media or PXE? From software center on an existing system?

  • I sent the TS of a clean Win 10 edu captured image to a Win 7 desktop client in software center, but sometimes PXE grabs it on boot up.

  • OK, that's something different. Why are the systems set to PXE boot automatically? That's just asking for issues.

  • I've tried not booting to PXE and still get the loop, so that's not the re-image loop problem.

  • Sorry, I'm not understanding this statement then: "but sometimes PXE grabs it on boot up".

What method exactly are you using to initiate the task sequence?

  • It depends on the scenario.  If we are just getting rid of Win 7 off of a machine, I push the captured image to Software Center where a tech takes over.  If it's a new machine that doesn't have an OS, which is how we purchase them, I either have to use media or push it down to PXE.  All 3 methods have been known to cause the re-image loop.

  • OK, for the PXE scenario, are you using Unknown Computer Support?

How many deployments do you have for the task sequence and what collections are targeted by these deployments?

Are you sure that the task sequences are finishing completely successfully?

  • If you have configured the deployment to re-run if the program fails, wonder if your builds are failing at some stages and then repeating the sequence all over. Do you see this in your SMSTSlogs or monitoring summarization for these OS Deployments

Yes we use unknown Computer Support.

That task sequence has been deployed to just 20 collections right now.  Those collections are school-wide systems that we need to update.  It works on about 80% with no problems but that other 20% keep looping.

I can't find the failure in the smsts log.  I posted one of them above though in the original post.
