Force-freetape.ps1 doesn't work RRS feed

  • Question

  • Since we upgraded to DPM 2012 SP1, we have major problems with tape backups with following alert:

Failed to perform the operation since the tape free tape is not available in Stand Alone Drive Tape Library Hewlett Packard LTO Ultrium-5 drive (ID 24050)

This is despite the fact that the retention time is passed, so it seems as if DPM doesn't want to overwrite the data present on the tapes. The funny thing is that some of the data fits onto the tapes, but when reaching 50-60% of the total amount of data backed up I get the above alert. When using the built-in script force-freetape.ps1, just nothing happens:

    PS C:\Program Files\Microsoft DPM\DPM\bin> .\ForceFree-Tape.ps1

cmdlet ForceFree-Tape.ps1 at command pipeline position 1
Supply values for the following parameters:
    DPMServerName: DPM
LibraryName: Hewlett Packard LTO Ultrium-5 drive
    TapeLocationList[0]: 0
    TapeLocationList[1]:
    PS C:\Program Files\Microsoft DPM\DPM\bin>

    Am I doing something wrong?

    /Amir

  • When it asks for tapeLocation[0] or [1] you have to specify it with "slot-#" (eg. Slot-1 or whatever the slot number it is in your library.)

cmdlet ForceFree-Tape.ps1 at command pipeline position 1
Supply values for the following parameters:
    DPMServerName: DPMServerName
LibraryName: Hewlett Packard LTO Ultrium-5 drive
    TapeLocationList[0]: slot-1
    TapeLocationList[1]: slot-15                                                                                                       TapeLocationList[2]:                                                                                                                                               PS C:\Program Files\Microsoft DPM\DPM\bin>

  • OK, this is a single tape device but found that the value for "tapelocationlist" has to be i.e. \\.\Tape2147483645 instead, so now it's working just fine :)
