R3 licensing / release for SCCM 2007

Question
-
A couple of headings on Microsoft's Configuration Manager Licensing page [http://www.microsoft.com/systemcenter/en/us/configuration-manager/cm-pricing-licensing.aspx * ] now say "How to Buy Configuration Manager 2007 R3" and "Before You Buy Configuration Manager 2007 R3".
Does this mean that anyone who buys SCCM 2007 from now on will be licensed for R3? Or do you still need EA or SA to get R2 and R3, regardless of when purchased?
Also, is there any news about the release date for R3 download?

Also notice that the ONLY thing on the page you linked to that mentions R3 is the page title. Everything else on that page talks about R2. R3 is not yet available so I dout there's a SKU that will let you purchase it.

So if someone buys SCCM today without SA, they would have to buy: SCCM site server license, R2 license, and Enterprise CAL pack / client MLs?
(I'm not talking about an existing non-R2 customer wanting to upgrade, but rather someone who's never had any System Center product before.)
Not exactly.... When you purchase SCCM you own the current "R" version, that's not sold seperately. For instance if you purchased SCCM at RTM time you only own RTM, if you purchased after R2 was released you own R2, the same will go for R3 once it's released. However if you purchased at R2 time without SA you have to totally repurchase SCCM to get R3. When I say repurchase I mean all licenses for server and client.
Unfortunately I know this because we do not have SA. :-(

Hi,
R3 is a feature pack for SA customers. There is no confirmed release date yet (to my knowledge).

To expand on what kent is said... "R" versions of SCCM are never free. If you purchase SCCM R3 then you will own it. If you purchase SCCM R2 without SA then you will have to totally repurchase SCCM in order to get R3. There's no upgrade license available. Anyone who purchases SCCM without SA should seriously reconsider their licensing strategy IMO.

Hi,
There is no confirmed release data for SCCM R3.
Have a look at http://www.microsoft.com/systemcenter/en/us/configuration-manager/cm-r3.aspx and this short video - http://www.microsoft.com/systemcenter/en/us/configuration-manager.aspx on R3 OS deployment.

Where the site says, for example, "Configuration Manager Server 2007 R2 $579 U.S.", I would have thought the price included R2.

Agree. I hope we were advised to buy SA when SCCM was sold to us (I don't have login for our Microsoft Licensing, so I can't check by myself.)

Thanks for the clarification, John.
I was getting confused with all the talk of buying R2 or R3 versus "R3 is a feature pack". I guess you say that you buy SCCM licenses with a current feature release level; then those licenses allow you to download and install the corresponding feature packs as separate add-ons.
So going back to my original question, where the licensing page says "How to Buy Configuration Manager 2007 R3", we're assuming that is a glitch, and that there won't be any SKU released for purchase before R3 is out of beta and the RTW bits are available for download, right?

The only way to get an authoritative answer is calling a MS licensing specialist IMHO.

I'd agree that the listing of R3 on that site is just someone at MS jumping the gun on updating that website. Obviously you can't buy R3 before it's released. Again, IMO it's a mistake to purchase SCCM without SA. If you purchase SA all of these worries go away.
