Is it possible to run the same .vhd file from boott menu and Virtual PC ? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

    I have a main installation of Windows 7 64bit.
I then made a new vhd file from the repair console of the windows 7 setup, like:
    http://www.hanselman.com/blog/LessVirtualMoreMachineWindows7AndTheMagicOfBootToVHD.aspx
Placing my new vhd on my E: partition and attach.

The install of windows 7 on this drive worked just fine, it also got added to the boot menu.
    Everything ok. Runs ok.

I then installed Virtual PC RC on my main Windows 7 installation. Created a new VM and tried to use my .vhd file from before.
But no luck, is runs the boot securence and then tries PXE. Then promt about boot device.

Is this senario possible, if any hints about what could be the problem ?

    /P

  • Virtual PC installs its own bootloader and HAL. It's not finding what it needs. This is similar to making a full system backup in Vista or Windows 7 and trying to use VPC boot from that vhd - it won't boot.
