Sharepoint WSS 3.0 work with Microsoft SQL Server 2005 RRS feed

  • Question

  • I was trying to find a program and accidently found out that I have SQL Server 2005 in my Vista computer.  I was not aware that I had a server.  Can I go ahead and install Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 with Service Pack 2 and be able to use it without having to use a hosted server? I just need to purchase a domain name?

I tried downloading WSS 3.0 on my laptop few weeks ago and it wouldnt finish installing because I did not have Server 2003 on my laptop. I was reading the system reuirement and it says need Server 2003 or 2008?  It makes me wonder if I can get it to work with Server 2005.

  • You seem to be confusing the Operating System with the version of SQL Server.

WSS 3.0 can be installed on Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008.

WSS 3.0 also typically uses some form of SQL Server 2005 for its databases but could also use SQL Server 2008.

The mere fact that you have SQL Server 2005 installed in a computer does not make that a server. In your case you have as Operating System on your computer Windows Vista which is a client Operating System. WSS 3.0 will not install on that unless you put it in a Virtual Machine that is itself running Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008.
