Active Directory Planning. Remote Offices and Loss of Connection RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm new to AD, and am setting one up for my small business.  I have a remote site and will likely have a single forest, single tree architecture that goes something like    mybusiness.com nc.mybusiness.com va.mybusiness.com     The root DC will be located in the va office, my question is this:

What happens if the connection between the va and nc offices are lost?  Will the subordinate DC in NC still be able to function autonomously?

    Thanks!

  • I found my answer in the Mastering Active Directory for Windows Server 2003 book.  Apparently since server 2k3, a user with their credentials replicated at a local domain controller can still work within their own domain even if the connection to the Global Catalog located on the Root DC has been severed.
