REMOVAL OF CHILD DOMAIN MANUALLY RRS feed

  • Question

  • HI,

I need help regarding removal of child domain from drop down list on login screen.

Background: We have a child forest root domain with some name like.... dreamworks.org in our domain environment of Server 2008 later on we created new domain for our newly opened office in some remote site...  with name of CITYOFFICE.dreamworks.org.  .... after few months of deploying a new child domain and two Domain Controller in city office site, we thought we should demote and remove the DC AND child domain from our environment and we did that.... everything was demoted and removed successfully.

Problem: is that we have done all activities successfully and received no error. We found existing and removed both domains on login screen. We need solution to remove the removed city office domain from the log on windows. Although DCs are removed successfully. But removed domain is still there

Need your help waiting for Reply…

    Thanking you…

  • The domain is listed in drop down due to their presence in AD domain and trust console.Make sure you remove the trust which is listed in AD domain and trust console.Child domain is not demoted properly because child domain automatically creates two way trust relation with parent/root domain.

You can refer below article to perform metadata of the domain or manually remove the references from the location listed below.

  • HI,

If trust is still there, you need to remove it as you have removed chiild domain. If you have already done then try below things:

    > If you are using WINS, make sure the domain entries don't appear on your WINS server.  Sometimes entries can remain there and need to remove them.

    > Also check registry "DomainCache" subkey of HKLM\Software\Microsoft\windows nt\current version\winlogon and remove unwanted domain names.

  • The error is due to presence of application directory partition domaindnszone and forestdnszone for child domain in configuration directory partition. You can refer below two links.

  • Trust between parent-child domain is created automatically and you as far as i know you can't remove it manually. It is removed automatically post removing the last DC in the child domain.

  • Agree with awinish,

You can perform metadata clean up if old child DC references exists in your domain.
