DPM 2012 simultaneous encryption and compression, can it be done? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Does anyone know why, other than because MS says you can't, DPM 2012 doesn't allow you to use encryption and compression together?  The compression is a command sent to the tape drive to compress the data, not something DPM does, so why can't DPM encrypt the data before it is sent to the tape drive to compress it and write to tape?  We want both encryption and compression, does anyone know of a product that would provide encryption for data coming out of DPM before it gets to the tape drive to be compressed?

    Thanks,

    Brian

  • Hello Brain,

No, for SP1 there is an option that the data is compressed and encrypted at the DPM server before it's send to Azure. Maybe this is also possible for the local backup devices.

      • Data compression, encryption and throttling.
      • Data is compressed and encrypted on the server before being sent to Windows Azure over the network. As a result, Windows Azure Online Backup only places encrypted data in the cloud storage.
      • The encryption passphrase is not available in Windows Azure, and as a result data is never decrypted in the service.
      • Users can setup throttling and configure how Windows Azure Online Backup utilizes the network bandwidth when backing up or restoring information.
